Detailed Information:
From this common ground, the volunteers work together in protective efforts to preserve the fragil coral reef communities. Ocean Watch Foundation, along with the Broward County Department of Planning and Environmental Protection are responsible for the establishment of the largest mooring buoy system in 1989 off the coast of Broward County, which is currently being managed by the county. We are also involved in research projects dedicated to coral reef conservation. Each year, Ocean Watch Foundation organizes the countywide Annual Reef Sweep. During the past 12 years over 3,600 divers have removed a staggering 7 1/2 tons of harmful and unsightly debris from our local coral reefs. This has been accomplished through the dedication of divers on charter dive boats, beach divers, divers on private boats and beach cleanups. Ocean Watch Foundation members have visited local dive clubs, schools, civic organizations and other public forums to give presentations to heighten public awareness of our beautiful coral reefs, which are one of the greatest natural resources of South Florida. We have contributed funds to organizations whose goals are for the preservation of coral reefs and our marine environment. Our motto is preserve, protect and educate.
