The Organization for Environmental Education and Protection -OpEPA- intends to become the leading environmental education promoter in Colombia, South America. A non-governmental, non-profit organization based in Bogotá, OpEPA’s objective is to significantly increase society’s environmental awareness and responsibility. By offering novel educational programs that provide challenging and thought-provoking experiences outside of the classroom, OpEPA hopes to plant the seed of environmental and cultural awareness in each individual. In addition, OpEPA plans to support specific grassroots programs promoting sustainable development and community-based solutions to environmental problems.

The Organization for Environmental Education and Protection - OpEPA- is a non-profit organization founded on 1998 by Luis Alberto Camargo, Camilo Camargo and Nicole Zangen. This organization unites the energy, creativity, experience and knowledge of its founders generating an integral work force, endorsed by a Board of Directors and an Advisory Committee of international authorities in environmental and other fields. Mission: OpEPA’s mission is to provide unique educational experiences that integrate ecological, social, economic, and cultural aspects, thus producing attitudes and actions in people directed to preserve the environment. By means of specific projects and campaigns, OpEPA hopes to facilitate challenging experiences and to act as a catalyst in each individual, increasing environmental conscience. OpEPA aims to promote a better understanding and enjoyment of the cultural, ethnic and natural diversity of our world, while at the same time creating an awareness of the necessity of preserving this diversity. Vision: OpEPA’s vision is to be the leading organization providing outdoor, experiential and environmental education in Colombia and Latin America by the year 2005. OpEPA will also be a leader in the process of increasing community awareness of environmental problems and empowering individuals to become active agents of change towards an increasingly environmentally conscious and responsible society. Values: 1. OpEPA believes in respect as a fundamental value to generate honesty and tolerance, improving community life. 2. OpEPA believes in honesty and transparency. 3. OpEPA believes in man as an integral part of nature, belonging to its systems and cycles. 4. OpEPA believes that education is the best tool to create spaces for questioning which generate changes in attitudes. 5. OpEPA believes in the existence of development alternatives, which will bring better life quality for the present and future generations of all living things on Earth. 6. OpEPA believes that each individual has to be accountable for his actions and aware of the effects these have. 7. OpEPA believes in non-violence. Areas of Activity: OpEPA plans to promote several related ventures focusing on the following general areas of opportunity: Education and Information-Design and implement educational programs and workshops in schools, universities and other sectors of society to increase environmental conscience, and simultaneously develop programs that explore sustainable development alternatives -Promote education in areas related to environmental conservation and development by offering scholarships and additional forms of financing -Design and produce books, magazines, commercials, documentaries and other publications, traditional and electronic, to facilitate and contribute to the development of environmental conscience and knowledge in Colombia Research and Conservation-Develop and support research in subjects related to the environment-Establish and manage private natural reserves dedicated to environmental conservation and education Community Support -Implement programs to support, disclose and promote native traditional cultures and traditional farmers, their productive and environmental management systems, when these are in agreement with OpEPA’s mission and values-Design and develop programs to support rural and urban communities in their processes of planning and developing, searching for sustainable development alternatives Personal Initiative Support -Actively support and facilitate the execution of ideas and projects presented by individuals or institutions whose objectives are in agreement with those of OpEPA. -Promote and strengthen direct action, grassroot movements and community participation in processes that promote ecological diversity and positive action.
