Detailed Information:
Despite Washington State’s image as a rainfall mecca, our rivers suffer from water shortages, especially during late summer and early autumn when salmon return to fresh water to complete their life cycle. Depleted flows also degrade water quality by increasing concentrations of pollutants and stream temperatures. Through focusing on particular water bodies and precedent-setting water law, the Center brings its most effective skills and tactics to bear to leverage positive, reproducible change. We monitor the Department of Ecology’s Water Resources Program to identify areas where we can affect the most change, collaborate and educate to raise awareness about the diverse issues in that watershed, litigate to make sure that the influence we’ve had on that particular watershed sets precedents for the rest of the state, and conduct policy research. This geographical approach allows us to think about our work in practical terms, and allows us to build upon our successes in an orderly fashion.
